RiverHawks Host Green and Winchester Elementary Schools- Complete Champions Read!

The Umpqua Community College Department of Athletics finished up the 2017-2018 Champions in the Community program by completing their Champions Read initiative at Winchester and Green Elementary Schools and hosting both schools for their 2018 Field Day.

The Champions Read program finished up their year at Green Elementary, reading to and leaving books for all of the students in the two first-grade classes. For the year, the RiverHawk athletes visited and read to the 1st grade classes at Green and Winchester Elementary Schools on eleven different occasions, donating over 500 books to the school children.

On June 1st, Winchester and Green Elementary Schools visited the UCC campus to use our facilities and hold their annual Field Day. The day consisted of lots of physical activities, including swimming in the UCC pool and playing on the UCC obstacle course. There were over 500 kids on campus in grades K-5.

For the year, the RiverHawk student-athletes performed over 700 hours of community service for organizations such as the Roseburg Boy's & Girl's Club, Oakland School District, Winchester and Green Elementary Schools, the YMCA and the Roseburg Mat Club.

The Champions in the Community program is a program that is run by the UCC Department of Athletics to enhance the community and serve the people of Douglas County. The goal for the 2018-19 school year is to exceed 2000 hours of community service and increase the number of programs that we serve.
