UCC Wrestling Adds Repeat State Champion Kobe Olson

Championships abound as the Umpqua Men’s Wrestling program adds back-to-back OSAA 4A State Champion, Kobe Olson from Sweet Home High School in Sweet Home, Oregon.  Olson is a three-time State Championship placer and won titles at 120 and 126lbs. The Huskies of Sweet Home were crowned the OSAA 4A State Champions in 2017.

Olson finished with a career record of 183-35 from 2014-2017. He will be joining high school teammate Jacob Porter on the new RiverHawk team. The signing of Olson ups the number of State Championships to six, amongst the new signees.

UCC Head Men’s Wrestling Coach Kyle Temple has this to say about the signing of Olson,” “I am very excited to get an opportunity to work with Kobe as he continues his athletic and academic career here at UCC. Both Kobe and I graduated from Sweet Home High School and wrestled for Head Coach, Steve Thorpe. Everything that Kobe does comes from the same coaching style that I grew up in. It should be a seamless transition for him to move from one great program into building another great program here at Umpqua. He will likely wrestle at 133 or 141 pounds for the RiverHawks.”

The Umpqua Wrestling team has been brought back to the Roseburg, Oregon campus, and will begin competition in the fall of 2017.

Umpqua’s Department of Athletics is composed of nine varsity sports teams including four men's teams (basketball, cross country, wrestling and obstacle course racing), and five women's teams (basketball, cross country, volleyball, wrestling and obstacle course racing). Umpqua is a member of the Northwest Athletic Conference in all sports except men’s and women’s wrestling and obstacle course racing. For men’s wrestling UCC belongs to the National Junior College Athletic Association and for women’s wrestling, the Women’s Collegiate Wrestling Association.
