RiverHawks Headed to NJCAA National Championship

Umpqua Community College's men's wrestling team competed at the NJCAA West District Championships in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, on Sunday and qualified five wrestlers for the national competition.

Garrett Russell, Braydon Wright, Nathan Kiddoo, Adam Lamb and Sawyer Myres are headed to the NJCAA National Championship on March 1-2, in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

Kiddoo (125) fell in 38 seconds to Zeth Brower of Clackamas Community College in the first-round match of the district champs. 

Myres was defeated by Elijah Ozuna of Clackamas in the first-round match of the 141-pound bracket. Ozuna won by fall in 2:39.

In the 285-pound bracket Adam Lamb finished second after falling to Clackamas' Tommy Mommer in the first-place match in 3:13.

Russell finished third in the 149-pound bracket. He won a 3-2 decision over SWOCC's AJ Lira in the third-round match. 

Wright won the third-place match in the 157-pound bracket with a fall over Aaron Runion of SWOCC in 3:41.

UCC's Johnny Maldonado (133), Jesse Ramirez (165), Josh Hammers (174), Gottlieb Davis (184) and Brayden Schultz (197) finished fifth.

Umpqua finished fourth as a team with 107 points. The tournament was won by Clackamas Community College with 196 points, followed by North Idaho College (143.5) and Southwest Oregon Community College (123).
