Trevino Wins National Championship, RiverHawks Finish 8th at WCWA National Championship

The Umpqua RiverHawks travelled to Atlanta, Georgia to participate in the WCWA National Championships and returned home with an 8th place finish, four All-Americans and one National Champion.

At the 101lb weight class, sophomore Esthela Trevino went through the first 3 rounds of competition without being scored on, to end up facing McKenzie Bacich from Campbellsville University for the National Championship. The match finished tied 2-2, but Trevino prevailed on criteria, claiming the RiverHawk's 1st National Championship. The championship earns her a berth to the Olympic Trials qualifier at Penn State University on April 4th and 5th.

Sophomore Jade Piper advanced to the semi-final round before losing and finishing in 4th place. Other placers for the RiverHawks were freshman Grace Miller (6th) and sophomore Sienna Lejeune (8th). All top eight finishers were awarded All-American status.  These four RiverHawks were the first All-Americans in the history of the program.

Mariah Annis, Lejeune and Trevino were also awarded WCWA Academic All-American status for their work in the classroom, also a first for the RiverHawk program.

The RiverHawks will travel to Allen, Texas in early March to participate in the NCWA National Folkstyle Championships.
