Derek is local to Douglas County, coming out of Camas Valley Oregon where he graduated from Camas Valley High School in 2018. A 2 sport athlete in High School, Derek played Basketball for 2 years and he also ran Track for 2 years earning a letter for both years of competing in his sports. O'Connor was awarded 2nd team for Basketball and he was awarded 1st team All-state for Track.
