Powell Leads Umpqua

OREGON CITY — Dajaney Powell was a force inside once again for the Umpqua Community College women's basketball team on Saturday.

The redshirt freshman post scored 32 points and added 13 rebounds for a double-double as Umpqua posted an 82-44 win over Olympic in a semifinal game of the Clackamas Thanksgiving Invitational.

The Riverhawks (2-0) will meet host Clackamas (3-0), an 85-62 winner over Southwestern Oregon of Coos Bay, at 2 p.m. today for the title.

Powell hit 14 of 21 shots from the field in 27 minutes. She had 25 points in Friday's win over Pierce.

"Daisy was hard to guard and her teammates did a good job of finding her," said UCC coach Dave Stricklin.

Umpqua led 39-29 at halftime, then pulled away from the Rangers (1-1) by outscoring them, 29-4, in the third quarter.

"We didn't play at a very good pace in the first half," Stricklin said. "We had 17 turnovers. But we only had four turnovers in the second half. We controlled the tempo and got good shots. We only gave up 15 points and played pretty good defense."

Ashley Backen, a Roseburg High graduate, made 5 of 9 shots and finished with 13 points and four assists for the Riverhawks. Bria Thames posted a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Former Roseburg standout Jordan Stotler notched a double-double with 10 points and 16 boards, and added seven assists and three blocked shots.

Umpqua was credited with 24 assists on 32 field goals, with Tasia Bilbrew dishing out nine. The Riverhawks dominated the glass, outrebounding Olympic 58-26.

Taylor Sunkel led Olympic with 17 points and six rebounds. The Rangers were held to 31 percent shooting from the field.

The Riverhawks take on a Clackamas club that is coached by Sutherlin High graduate Jim Martineau. Ex-Sutherlin standout Kayce Mock starts for the Cougars.
