The Umpqua Community College Department of Athletics has kicked off the Champions Read program for the 2016-17 school year. The Champions Read program is a part of the Champions in the Community service platform that UCC Athletics spearheads on a yearly basis.
The Champions Read program includes members of the varying athletic teams visiting the 1st grade classrooms at Winchester Elementary and Green Elementary Schools. The visits will happen at different times for the entirety of the school year. During the visits, the RiverHawk athletes read to all of the class members in small groups, and leave all of the students with a book upon the completion of each visit.
Over 100 students will be read to during each visit to the two elementary schools and over 600 books will be donated to the school children.
