Hawks Add Friesen and Cobb

Hawks Add Friesen and Cobb

Umpqua Community College Men's Wrestling is pleased to announce the signing of two Oregonian Wrestlers. Joshua Friesen from McNary High school in Salem, Oregon and Jayden Cobb of Cresent Valley High School in Corvallis, Oregon.

Friesen has won or placed very high in many tournaments throughout his high school career, but none of them chalk up to the impressive State Championship he won during the 2022/23 season. Friesen capped off his senior year a Champion and looks to continue that success here at UCC.

Cobb has had a very impressive high school career and is excited to continue that success at the college level. Cobb is a 2x Resers TOC placer and is a 2x State medalist finishing 5th place as a Junior and coming off of a 3rd place finish as a Senior.

Director of Wrestling Anthony Weerheim had this to say about the signing of Friesen and Cobb, "We are very lucky to have committed these two talented wrestlers. Lets face it, we are on a complete rebuild here at Umpqua, on the Men's Wrestling side. With only four returners, we have a lot of depth to fill and the goal has been to stack our lineup with talented wrestlers who plan to acheive goals both on the wrestling mat and in the classroom. Both of these young men are are just that, they will be excellent additions to our freshly built team. These guys will be a part of the foundation/building blocks to put Umpqua on the map as a top NJCAA team in the Country. From my experience around these young men, they both have a great mindset and seem to be very coachable. I have no doubt they are going to thrive with this new talented group of freshman coming in, along with our returners. We look forward to what this 23/24 season has coming for UCC Men's Wrestling."

Three out of the four UCC returners have not had the opportunity to wear the Umpqua uniform yet as they all have transferred in during the Winter term of 2022, which made them all Redshirts. We are also excited to see John Paul Lavarias of (Anchorage, Alaska), Scout Nash (Sandpoint, Idaho), Varrius Scanlan a local from (Roseburg, Oregon) and Dale Wells (Myrtle Creek, Oregon) who has already been a one year starter for the Hawks, make their way into the 23/24 season.
