Stricklin to Join RiverHawk Basketball

The Umpqua Community College Women’s Basketball team is excited to announce that Sutherlin High School’s Taylor Stricklin, who was recently named the Oregon’s 4A State Player of the Year, has signed a letter of intent to play for the RiverHawks.

Stricklin, the daughter of UCC ‘s women’s basketball coach, Dave Stricklin, helped lead Sutherlin to back-to-back state championships and back-to-back Sky-Em League championships. As a junior she averaged 18.5ppg and scored 21.2ppg as a senior, breaking the SHS single season scoring record each year. She also set the Oregon 4A State Tournament record for most 3’s in a game.

Stricklin’s other honors include being named to the USA Today All Oregon team,  Sky-Em League MVP,  Ecksmark All- American, and a nomination to play in the McDonald’s High School All-American game. As a 4.00 student, Stricklin’s current plans are to eventually become a nurse but wouldn’t be surprised if she ends up coaching basketball at some point in the future.

“Obviously I’ve been watching Taylor play for years and several things have always impressed me,” said Coach Stricklin.  “Taylor is extremely competitive in everything that she does, she has a great work ethic and she can score in a variety of ways. She’s going to have a great career here. We would’ve recruited her to UCC no matter what her last name happened to be!”

Umpqua Women’s basketball is coming off of a 29-3 record and an appearance in the NWAC Final 4.

Umpqua’s Department of Athletics is composed of nine varsity sports teams including four men's teams (basketball, cross country, wrestling and obstacle course racing), and five women's teams (basketball, cross country, volleyball, wrestling and obstacle course racing). Umpqua is a member of the Northwest Athletic Conference in all sports except men’s and women’s wrestling and obstacle course racing. For men’s wrestling UCC belongs to the National Junior College Athletic Association and for women’s wrestling, the Women’s Collegiate Wrestling Association.
