RiverHawks Sign Five

RiverHawk Women's Wrestling is excited to announce the addition of five new wrestlers for the 2020-21 season.

Melia Cuevas placed 3rd at the Oregon State Championships while helping her team to a runner-up finish at the State Championship. She was a Top 3 finisher in every tournament that she was entered in. She also played softball for 4 years at Bend High School in Bend, Oregon.

Head Coach Craig Jackson on the addition of Cuevas: "Melia is very strong and a good athlete. She is very new to the sport and we are excited about where she will go in our program."

Evita Negrete is a senior from Rosemont High School in Sacramento, California. Negrete placed 2nd in California Greco State, 4th at World Challenge, 3rd at California Super 32, 1st at NCG Fall classic, 5th at Freakshow, 1st place at The Wild West tournament, and 1st at Rumble in Reno.

Jackson on Negrete: "Evita is hard-working, skilled and determined. Her passion for the sport will carry over to our wrestling room and that is very exciting."

Brisa Salas is a senior from Patterson High School in Paterson, California. She is a swimmer and water polo player, as well as a wrestler. As a junior Salas placed 2nd in the Central California Conference Tournament and was 4th at the regional qualifier. As a senior, Salas was undefeated in league completion, prior to suffering a clavicle fracture that ended her season.

"Brisa was a multi-sport kid in high school and we are looking forward to what she will look like, doing wrestling year-round. She is a nice addition to our middle-weight line-up", added Coach Jackson

Kathryn Philbrook hails from Sedalia, Missouri and Smith-Cotton High School. Philbrook was a member of the wrestling team, soccer and cheer. Philbrook was a member of Smith-Cotton's first all-girls team and recorded 20 wins, 15 of them by fall.

"Kathryn will provide some much needed depth in our lower weight classes. As with most of our women's wrestlers coming from high school, free-style will be new to her, so we are excited to see how her athleticism transfers to this new style," said Head Coach Jackson.

Violeta Evangelista is a senior from North Salem High School in Salem Oregon. Evangelista wrestled for seven years, along with participating in dance, marching and concert band and basketball.  Evangelista's senior campaign was cut short due to a dislocated elbow.

Jackson on Evangelista,"Vio is excited to be a UCC RiverHawk and that is the beginning of being successful in our program. She brings energy, work ethic and passion to our room.  She will be a very good addition to our program."

The Umpqua Community College Women's team is in its 3rd year of existence and finished as the Top-Ranked Community College program in the country. The RiverHawks placed 2nd in the NWCA National Championships, and 8th in the WCWA National Championships. They had 10 All-American placers and 3 National Champions during the 2019-20 season, including Olympic Trial Qualifier Esthela Trevino.
