Big Performances by the RiverHawks at the NWAC Multi-Event Championships

Three RiverHawks competed at the NWAC Multi-Event Championships at Lane CC on May 1st-2nd. Avery Shinkle competed in the heptathlon while James Kelly and Daniel Gee competed in the decathlon. 

James Kelly took 2nd in the decathlon to earn All-American honors and he was the South Region Champion. Daniel Gee took 4th in the decathlon to earn All-Conference and All-South Region honors. Avery Shinkle took 6th in the heptathlon to also earn All-Conference and All-South Region honors.

On day one, Avery Shinkle ran  PR in the 100m hurdles of 17.83, she matched her PR in high jump of 1.22m/4-0ft, threw an impressive PR in shot put to win the event with a throw of 9.75m/32-0ft, and ran a new PR in the 200m with a time of 29.32 to finish the day with 1,881 points. James Kelly ran 11.40 in the 100m (collegiate best time) while Daniel Gee ran a PR of 11.71. James Kelly broke his own school record in the LJ with a jump of 6.62m/21-8.75ft and Daniel Gee jumped a PR of 5.60m/18-4.5ft. Both guys threw huge PRs in soht put with James throwing 10.46m/34-4ft and Daniel Gee threw 10.20m/33-5.75ft. In the high jump, James jumped 1.85m/6-0.75 and Daniel jumped 1.76m/5-9.25ft. The guys finished the day with the 400m, as Daniel Gee ran a PR of 51.82 and James Kelly went 54.07. James Kelly led all competitors after day 1 with a score of 3,319 points and Daniel Gee had 3,035 points.

On day two, Avery Shinkle jumped 4.35m/14-3.25ft in long jump, she threw a new PR in javelin of 24.20m/79-4ft, and finished the 800 in a new personal best time of 3:09.80. Avery broke the school record with 2,918 points, placed 6th amongst the conference and 4th amongst the south region competitors. James Kelly tied his PR in the 110m hurdles of 16.03 and Daniel Gee ran a signicantly faster new PR of 17.77. Both guys threw new PRs in discus as well, as Daniel threw 27.74m/91-0ft and James threw 25.28m/82-11ft. In pole vault, both guys cleared 4.20m/13-9.25ft and led all competitors in the event. They both threw new PRs in javelin, as James threw 35.11m/115-2ft and Daniel threw 33.39m/109-6ft. They finished the day with new personal bests in the 1500m, as Daniel won the event with a time of 4:42.77 and James ran 5:22.21. Both guys scored over the previous school record, but James Kelly came out on top with 5,904 points and Daniel Gee finished with 5,684 points. James finished 2nd in the conference and 1st in the south region, while Daniel Gee finished 4th in the conference and 3rd in the south region.

The 3 RiverHawks will look forward to competing at the NWAC Championships with the rest of the team in just 3 weeks, where they will also be honored for the points and performances from this meet. Before that, however, they will join the team to compete at the South Region Championships.
