RiverHawks Break the Ice of the Season at Linfield Icebreaker

The RiverHawk Track and Field team took on the Linfield Erik Anderson Memorial Icebreaker on Friday and Saturday March 1st-2nd. Temperatures never went over 40 degrees, and snow and rain were constant throughout the day, as well as strong winds. It was an icebreaker to say the least. 

The RiverHawk men had a strong showing depsite the tough conditions with a 4th place finish of 20 teams and 68.5 points. They picked up wins in three seperate events. In the field events, the javelin crew had the toughest day throwing into a both a head and cross wind, however, Leikel Cabrera-Gay still picked up the win with 55.45m/181-11ft. James Kelly secured the win in pole vault, just a few inches under his school record with a jump of 4.40m/14-5.25ft. Xavier Hills had a strong showing for the day with a win in triple jump, as he went 13.18m/43-3ft, and he took 2nd in the high jump with 1.85m/6-0.75ft. Ismayil Abdoulaye and Isaac Heard both finished 2nd and 3rd in the javelin throwing 51.58m/169-2ft and 48.73m/159-10ft. In discus, Okenoko Pascall threw in the first of four flights and secured himself a spot in finals and finished 4th overall with a throw of 41.53m/136-3ft. Ethan Sumpter secured the last 4 of 28 total points from the javelin crew by placing 5th with a throw of 47.53m/155-11ft. Tarron Metz and Daniel Gee both placed for the Hawks jumping 4.10m/13-5.25, but with misses, Tarron finished 4th and Dan 6th. Notably, Connor Deveny ran the 10k on Friday night and ran a solid personal best at 35:37.29, then came back Saturday for the 5k where he also ran an open 5k personal best of 17:01.60.

The RiverHawk women secured points from the field and from the track placing 8th of 21 teams with 27.5 points. Kylie Anderson concluded the day in the shot put with a 3rd place finish and a mark of 10.68m/35-0.5ft. Lexi McWilliam ran her first 5k on the track with a time of 22:00.93, good enough for 3rd place. The women's javelin crew also secured points on their side with Kylie Rubrecht taking 3rd (31.10m/102-0ft and Madelyn Sharp taking 5th (30.47m/99-11ft). Gabrielle Hrdlicka has been taking on a new event this season with the high jump and on the day she cleared 1.37m/4-6 to place 6th. Keelin Johnson also ran her first 5k on the track running just a couple seconds shy of her personal best from cross country with a time of 23:51.67, still placing her 6th to finish up the points for the Hawks. Mia McCormack had a notable race in the 800m as she finished in 2:47.00, just a few seconds shorts of her personal best time, which was quite the feat given the weather.

 

The RiverHawks will be back in action and hoping for better weather conditions next weekend as they take on the LCC Open at Lane Community College in Eugene on Saturday, March 9th. Roll Hawks!!
